What is Horse Sense?

Horse Sense is a structured, inclusive learning program that uses equine-assisted education to teach young people core skills in literacy, numeracy, and emotional development. Designed to align with UK National Curriculum Key Stages 1–4, it provides a measurable, certificate-based pathway for academic and personal growth—while nurturing a love and respect for horses.

Whether attending for extra support in English and Maths, for a structured alternative to the classroom, or simply to gain deep, hands-on knowledge of horses and their care, participants are supported to thrive at their own pace in a calm, outdoor learning environment.

Curriculum with a Difference

Each module of Horse Sense integrates horse-related content with UK curriculum targets in a way that’s tactile, engaging, and relevant:

English Skills

• Instruction following, sequencing, reading comprehension
• Vocabulary building using horse care terminology
• Creative and instructional writing: e.g. “How to tack up a horse” or “A day in the stable”

Maths Skills

• Measuring feed and tack equipment
• Budgeting for horse care supplies
• Timetables and problem-solving around care routines

Equine Knowledge

• In-depth learning of anatomy, behaviour, nutrition, stable management
• Equine health and safety procedures
• Daily care, grooming, and horsemanship
